What we do

Restoring Lands, Empowering Communities, Securing the Future

At Soils for the Future Africa (SftFA), we are committed to revitalizing Africa’s degraded rangelands by restoring soil health, strengthening pastoralist livelihoods, and driving climate resilience.
We believe healthy soils are the foundation for sustainable ecosystems, thriving communities, and a stable global climate.

SftFA leads pioneering efforts in soil carbon restoration projects across East Africa, with our flagship initiative — the Kajiado Rangeland Carbon Project (KRCP) — covering over 1.5 million hectares of critical Maasai rangelands in southern Kenya.

What We Do

  • Advance Soil Health:
We focus on restoring soil productivity, increasing water retention, and reviving biodiversity essential for sustainable grazing and agriculture.
  • Empower Communities:
Working hand-in-hand with pastoralist communities, we enhance traditional practices through modern grazing management, providing training, governance support, and long-term income opportunities.
  • Scale Rangeland Restoration:
Through rapid rotational grazing and fire management strategies, we regenerate vast landscapes, enhancing both ecological function and resilience.
  • Capture Soil Carbon:
Our projects boost soil organic matter, effectively capturing atmospheric carbon and combating climate change — a benefit for both local and global communities.
  • Innovate Sustainable Financing:
We generate certified carbon credits, creating a durable funding model that rewards communities for sustainable land stewardship over decades.

Our Partnerships

SftFA collaborates with respected organizations like Soils for the Future Tanzania and CarbonSolve, blending world-class technical expertise with grassroots knowledge.
We also work closely with local governments, particularly Kajiado County, to align our efforts with county development and environmental policies.

Our Approach

  • Community-Led:
Decisions are made by local grazing committees that represent women, youth, and elders, guided by principles of Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC).
  • Science-Driven:
Our programs are based on peer-reviewed research demonstrating the power of rotational grazing to boost soil carbon and ecosystem resilience across East Africa.
  • Locally Rooted, Globally Relevant:
While we focus on the Maasai and broader East African rangelands, our model offers a blueprint for sustainable land restoration and carbon sequestration across the continent.
  • Transparent and Accountable:
With formal MOUs in place with local governments and community organizations, we ensure clarity, shared benefits, and enduring trust.

Our Flagship Project: KRCP

The Kajiado Rangeland Carbon Project (KRCP) represents one of Africa’s largest soil carbon initiatives.
It stands as a model for how carbon finance can drive large-scale ecological restoration while directly benefiting indigenous pastoralists — protecting their cultural identity, enhancing food security, and fostering resilience against climate shocks.

Why It Matters

Misinformation often threatens sound, community-based conservation efforts in Africa. At SftFA, we stand for truth, transparency, and trust, backed by science and deep community partnerships.
We are proving that restoring soils isn’t just about saving the land — it’s about saving livelihoods, preserving heritage, and building a resilient future.

Together, one hectare at a time, we are healing the land and uplifting lives.
